The Italian comics artist Mirka Andolfo was born and grew up in Naples. She developed an interest in comics from childhood, and studied at the Scuola Italiana di Comix in Naples, leaving part-way through her course to move to Turin. Her professional career began at eighteen, when she was commissioned to colour a comic for the French market. She subsequently worked extensively as a colourist, including on Topolino and other Disney material, Geronimo Stilton, Adventure Time, Ice Age and Peanuts.

Andolfo began establishing herself as an artist and writer in her own right in the early 2010s. In 2012 she created Sacro/Profano (Sacred/Profane), a comic about the relationship between an angel and a demon. Originally published in Italy by Dentiblù, it became a bestseller and was translated into several European editions and the United States. Her subsequent series ControNatura, published in English by Image Comics as UnNatural, combines fantasy with important social and political themes. It was followed by Mercy, and Sweet Paprika, a story centred on sexual liberation and pressures surrounding female sexuality.

Alongside her creator-owned work, Andolfo developed a substantial career in American mainstream comics. She began working for DC Comics in 2015, drawing characters including Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Teen Titans and Green Arrow. In 2020 she became the first Italian creator to both write and draw a complete story for DC, Fashion Victim, featuring Harley Quinn in the Black + White + Red anthology. She has also worked for Marvel, including illustrating two issues of Ms. Marvel, and for BOOM! Studios.

Andolfo’s work is characterised by expressive, stylised figures, and a visual language influenced by manga and Western comics. Her creator-owned stories frequently combine humour, fantasy and eroticism with issues around sexuality, identity and social expectations. Sweet Paprika won the Harvey Award for Best International Book in 2022.

Mirka Andolfo currently lives and works in Turin, where she has been based since leaving Naples. She continues to work between Italy and the United States, combining creator-owned books with work for major American publishers. She is also a founding creator of the independent publisher DSTLRY, whose model gives its participating creators an ownership stake in the company.
