The five large prints of Fertility Suite bring together pregnancy, sexual anatomy, Haring’s ‘radiant baby’, and his recurring interest in bodies in motion. The compositions are dominated by pregnant or reproductive figures. Bellies expand into patterned shapes, limbs interlock, and the radiant baby appears within scenes of activity and transformation.

Haring uses an exceptionally bright palette, in which acid yellow, pink, green, orange and black are separated by thick outlines, while repeated dots and short radiating marks make the figures appear to vibrate. The central reproductive forms are surrounded by smaller figures or by symbols associated with Haring’s wider visual vocabulary. One composition places a huge patterned pyramid at the centre, with figures and spacecraft around it; another concentrates on a group of pregnant bodies beneath the radiant baby.

The suite is important within Haring’s erotic work because its subject is not simply sexual activity but also reproduction. Penises, breasts, pregnant bodies and the infant figure coexist within the same graphic treatment.

Fertility Suite was published in New York by Tony Shafrazi Gallery as a portfolio of five screenprints on wove paper. The signed edition was limited to 100 copies, with 15 artist’s proofs. The prints were produced by Studio Heinrici.
