This hand-painted album featuring the 33 letters of the Cyrillic alphabet, each adorned with a colourful range of naked humans and devil-goats, is identified as the work of Sergei Merkurov because he conveniently signed and dated the portfolio, 17 October 1931. As far as we know it is his only erotic work, and its presentation suggests that it was created as a commission, who for we do not know.

The participants have the stolid blockiness associated with Soviet art of the period, and while most of the painting seems to be freehand there are indications that some of the repeating elements were created by stencil or woodblock.
