Les histoires de cul de l’oncle Zague (Uncle Zague’s Sex Stories) takes Didier Axterdam in a considerably lighter and more mischievous direction. Its central character, the ageing and entirely unrepentant Uncle Zague, regales his audience with outrageous stories of his sexually adventurous youth in the late 1980s. The publisher’s description of the series as tales told by a kind of wise father figure for adults neatly captures its mixture of nostalgic storytelling and thoroughly mature subject matter.

The episodic adventures range from Zague’s chaotic encounters with the beautiful but clumsy Vanessa to an increasingly extravagant hen party, an attempt to seduce a television celebrity, and escapades with a group of Parisian art students more interested in chasing women than painting.

Compared with the darker BDSM scenario of Surprise Surprise, the series is playful, anecdotal and deliberately nostalgic, presenting the pre-digital dating world as a playground for sexual misadventure. Axterdam’s energetic black-ink line suits the loose storytelling, allowing him to move rapidly between characters and situations.

The series began as a digital publication in April 2015 before being collected in book format by Éditions Dynamite.
