Though George Grosz is best known as a commentator on the decadence of Weimar Germany, his output as an erotic artist and illustrator has been sadly neglected. He was as biting and uncompromising (and often also surprisingly tender) about the sexual activities of his fellow Berliners as he was of their social and political proclivities, and remarkably ahead of his time in portraying sex in all its glorious and messy detail.

Here is a selection of his erotic drawings and paintings, starting with a couple of nude studies from his student days in Paris and ending with a series of rampant couplings and one of the best paintings of a vulva from the interwar period.
