The German artist Jürgen Görg was born in Dernbach, north-east of Koblenz, and grew up in Lahnstein on the River Rhine. After a short military service he studied art and art history at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, where under the mentorship of Hermann Ernst von Saalfeld he developed an academic precision in drawing and a lyrical sense of movement that would define his style. In 1979 Görg opened his own studio and gallery in Mainz, and the following year received awards from the State of Rheinland-Pfalz for his painting and from Ludwigshafen District for his graphic art.

After two years in Zürich, where he learned and experimented with lithography, in 1984 he moved back to the banks of the Rhine at Boppard, developing his trademark series of hand-coloured etchings, together with large canvases and sculptures. His limited edition prints proved extremely popular, and featured in exhibitions in Europe, the USA, Japan, India and South Africa throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

In 1994 Görg established a studio in New York and spent long periods there before returning permanently to Europe, first in France at Sainte-Foy-la-Grande in 2004, and then to Dublin in Ireland, where he has been based since 2005.

As well as his art, Görg has always been a musician, starting with an early intensive engagement with rock and jazz music as a guitarist and saxophonist; the influence of music, dance and rhythm can be seen in much of his work.
